Atlanta’s Westside Park Makes Its Debut

After fifteen years of planning and construction, Atlanta’s largest park is finally making its debut today. Locals will gather with Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms for the official ribbon cutting and grand opening of Westside Park Phase I.

LONG is proud to have provided civil site design for this project, as well as surveying services. The $26.5 million Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry is 280 acres, the largest greenspace in the City of Atlanta. It will also be transformative for Westside neighborhoods and become the home of a critical 2.4-billion-gallon backup source of drinking water for the city.

Park elements include a grand entrance, circulation drives, multiple rain gardens, a playground, parking lots, a grand lawn, and a spectacular overlook to view the quarry reservoir, trails and Mercedes Benz Stadium.

LONG is excited for this milestone completion and is currently designing the south trail extension connecting Westside Park to Woodson Park Academy, Grove Park Community, and Proctor Creek Trail.

Kendeda Named One of the Greenest Buildings in the World

It’s official – the Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design is one of the greenest buildings in the world!

The Georgia Institute of Technology announced on Earth Day 2021 that The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design earned Living Building Challenge certification, the world’s most ambitious and holistic green building achievement. LONG was proud to provide the civil engineering services on this $30M, eco-friendly project.

The Kendeda Building is among the greenest in the world for being “net positive” with its use of energy and water. In other words, the Kendeda Building generates more energy and captures more water than it uses.

The “Living Building” certification came after a 12-month performance period, where the building generated 225 percent of the energy needed to power all of its electrical systems from solar panels on its roof. It also collected, treated, and infiltrated 15 times the amount of water needed for building functions. It had to meet all seven “petals” in the Living Building Challenge – Place; Water; Energy; Health and Happiness; Materials; Equity and Beauty.

LONG Welcomes Michael De Leon as PM – Civil Site Design

LONG is pleased to welcome the addition of Michael De Leon, Project Manager – Civil Site Design.

Michael joins our team with nearly 21 years of experience focused on civil engineering design and project management. His experience includes managing medium to large stormwater quality improvement projects totaling $75 million in construction cost from design stage to construction completion. Projects components include storm drain systems, large cisterns (BMP structure), grading design, water treatment systems, landscaping and irrigation, and building control.

Design experience includes overseeing and developing the civil engineering design for the Port of Los Angeles, which included the preparation of a drainage system for the 1-mile long roadway improvements and viaduct; site grading, drainage, and utility design for Chevron’s building upgrade; blast resistant module projects in El Segundo, CA, as well as many more high-profile projects in the State of California.

Mr. De Leon has successfully interfaced with various public agencies and subconsultants. Additionally, he has effectively supervised engineering staff in the development of the design documents.

Butterworth 15 Year Anniversary

Savannah Cultural Arts Center wins Georgia AIA 2020 Design Award

Long Engineering provided civil engineering design services on The Savannah Cultural Arts Center, which was recently honored by the “Georgia Association of the American Institute of Architects” during their annual statewide 2020 design awards competition. Out of more than 140 entrants from across the state, this notable project was selected as a top award for design excellence. We are proud to have been included on Gunn Meyerhoff Shay’s team, and given an opportunity to play a valuable role.

The center has also received the Honor Award from the South Georgia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Located at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard and Oglethorpe Avenue, the Savannah Cultural Arts Center is a place where working artists and students of all ages can interact and participate in a love for the visual and performing arts. Completed in 2019, this approximately 42,000 SF facility includes a 400-seat performance hall, a black box theater, studios for dance and the arts, an art exhibit gallery, an outdoor performance space, and a partially restored Elbert Square.

Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design at Georgia Tech received ENR Southeast’s 2020 Best Green Project Award!

The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design recently received the ENR Southeast’s 2020 Best Green Project Award! LONG was a proud member of Lord Aeck Sargent‘s team, providing civil engineering services for this ambitious green infrastructure project on Georgia Tech’s campus that was a Project of the Year finalist.

Embracing the most rigorous building performance standards in the world, the Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design is a multi-disciplinary building intent on becoming the first Living Building Challenge certified facility in the Southeast.

This 47,000 s.f. building uses just one-third the energy of a similar building, generates more electricity than it uses on an annual basis from solar panels on its roof, and captures and treats rainwater for all purposes, including drinking. Nearly everything removed during construction was salvaged, recycled, or turned into another usable product. The project will serve as a living educational environment, providing hands-on learning opportunities that will be a model for the region and other identical environments worldwide.
