Honoring Ellen Long
For National Surveyors Week 2021, LONG is proud to recognize the hard work of our invaluable survey team crews and Professional Land Surveyors. We appreciate all of your contributions to the success of our company.
We would like to give a special shoutout to our team leaders Jaime Higgins, PLS, CP, David Simmons, Dan Riceman, and David Jones.
Happy National Land Surveyors Week!
LONG is pleased to welcome Catherine Rabun into her new role as Accounting Support.
Ms. Rabun will work with our Accounting Department to provide support to ensure efficient operation of the office. Having previously served as an Assistant Project Administrator with Volkert, she brings a valuable knowledge of GDOT projects, invoicing requirements, CMIS procedures, FAR rates and subconsultant verifications.
Due to our expanding growth into new market territories, Katie will play a vital role to the success and continued strengthening of our team!
From all of us here at LONG, welcome to the team, Katie!
LONG is a proud sponsor of the Georgia Institute of Technology chapter of Engineers in Action (EIA). This program provides a team of dedicated students with the opportunity to apply their technical and communication skills to a hands-on bridge build project, all while connecting isolated communities across the world to new opportunities and essential resources.
EIA has constructed 85 bridges in 11 counties, servicing 150,000 previously isolated individuals worldwide.
The EIA bridge program is a volunteer, non-profit organization whose mission is to construct suspended footbridges in rural communities in South America and Africa, increasing residents’ access to schools, job opportunities, hospitals, markets, and freshwater access points.
Through the EIA program, students have the opportunity to apply technical skills to hands on experiences. Student university chapters lead the design process and are given extensive responsibilities in the design and construction process. These projects engage the local community in construction and project development which fosters a sustainable approach to addressing poverty.

Ellen and Shepherd Long, P.E., LEED AP, on behalf of Long Engineering, have been dedicated to providing financial support to assist students in achieving their dream of a college degree by establishing 3 scholarships at Kennesaw State University. Together, these endowed scholarships have provided over $400,000 of perpetual funding for KSU students in need. We are so proud and blessed to keep Ellen’s spirit alive in support of these important causes.
In honor of Ellen Long, our firm’s founder and former president, we celebrate today what would have been Ellen’s 60th birthday. Our beloved founder sadly passed away in July 2019. Under her leadership, Long Engineering successfully grew to what it is today – we know that Ellen would be proud to see how far her company has come since it’s inception in 1997.
Ellen was a talented leader and mentor to people in her industry, and a joy to all those that met her. Ellen’s impact and presence were felt throughout the AEC community, and she continues to be greatly missed by all.
A life well lived leaves others enriched. Even though Ellen left us too soon, her life touched all of ours deeply. We remember her with joy in our hearts today.
