Honoring Ellen Long

In honor of Ellen Long, our firm’s founder and former president, we celebrate today what would have been Ellen’s 60th birthday. Our beloved founder sadly passed away in July 2019. Under her leadership, Long Engineering successfully grew to what it is today – we know that Ellen would be proud to see how far her company has come since it’s inception in 1997.

Ellen was a talented leader and mentor to people in her industry, and a joy to all those that met her. Ellen’s impact and presence were felt throughout the AEC community, and she continues to be greatly missed by all.

A life well lived leaves others enriched. Even though Ellen left us too soon, her life touched all of ours deeply. We remember her with joy in our hearts today.

LONG Sponsors EIA at Georgia Tech

LONG is a proud sponsor of the Georgia Institute of Technology chapter of Engineers in Action (EIA). This program provides a team of dedicated students with the opportunity to apply their technical and communication skills to a hands-on bridge build project, all while connecting isolated communities across the world to new opportunities and essential resources.

EIA has constructed 85 bridges in 11 counties, servicing 150,000 previously isolated individuals worldwide.

The EIA bridge program is a volunteer, non-profit organization whose mission is to construct suspended footbridges in rural communities in South America and Africa, increasing residents’ access to schools, job opportunities, hospitals, markets, and freshwater access points.

Through the EIA program, students have the opportunity to apply technical skills to hands on experiences. Student university chapters lead the design process and are given extensive responsibilities in the design and construction process. These projects engage the local community in construction and project development which fosters a sustainable approach to addressing poverty.

Scholarships at Kennesaw State University

Ellen and Shepherd Long, P.E., LEED AP, on behalf of Long Engineering, have been dedicated to providing financial support to assist students in achieving their dream of a college degree by establishing 3 scholarships at Kennesaw State University. Together, these endowed scholarships have provided over $400,000 of perpetual funding for KSU students in need. We are so proud and blessed to keep Ellen’s spirit alive in support of these important causes.
