Courtland Street Bridge Project Earns ACEC Georgia 2020 Engineering Excellence Grand Award

Congratulations to Michael Baker International for winning the ACEC Georgia 2020 Engineering Excellence Grand Award for the Courtland Street Bridge Project! We were honored to be a part of the team for Surveying and Subsurface Utility Engineering during this incredible project. Preserving the historical aspects of the original bridge while also reducing the construction impact on the local community, the new and improved Courtland Street Bridge serves as a major thoroughfare through the downtown campus of Georgia State University (GSU). Originally built in 1906, the bridge crosses over two Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) tracks, two CSX Railroad tracks, and Decatur Street. Under the original design-bid-build concept, the closure duration for the reconstruction of the bridge would have been at least 18 months but by using design-build and Accelerated Bridge Construction, the total roadway closure time was five months!

Introduce A Girl To Engineering

Long Engineering, Inc. recently participated in a half-day program known as ‘Introduce A Girl To Engineering‘. The program is sponsored by the engineering community and strives to engage and teach young girls about the engineering industry through fun, creative, and interactive activities. The program is for girls that are in upper elementary (K4-5), as well as middle school (6th-8th), who have an interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

This year’s event was hosted by ACEC-Georgia and included engineering booths with activities, a engineering trivia bowl, a program for parents on preparing your daughter for an engineering education, and a tour of Kennesaw State University’s Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology. LONG’s booth was titled ‘Let’s Keep Our Water Clean and Our Fish Alive’ and aimed at teaching children about erosion control and the role it plays in keeping our lakes, streams, and rivers safe for us, in addition to the natural habitats. Additionally, LONG’s booth offered kids the chance to conduct a turbidity lab test on various water samples and discover how it affects water quality and whether it is acceptable to drink. LONG’s team, Rosa Santillan, EIT, represented LONG as she educated children on the civil engineering industry and how it shapes the world around us. From roads and bridges to the water we drink, civil engineers make civilized life possible.
