Long Celebrates Recent Bobby Jones Golf Course Renovations

The successful grand opening of Boone’s restaurant, located at the newly renovated Bobby Jones Golf Course, took place on September 5. Joe Severin and Shepherd Long, P.E., LEED AP were proud to be there to support the opening on behalf of Long Engineering; the food and atmosphere was great and we thoroughly enjoyed our time spent reconnecting with a few old friends!

Our firm was proud to play a part in the recent Bobby Jones Golf Course renovations. These renovations included a wide range of improvements such as a 9-hole reversible golf course, a structured parking garage with tennis courts on top, a new clubhouse, and a new driving range and practice facility. Long Engineering provided full site design services including stormwater management and NPDES compliance for the entire 144-acre site with close coordination from the City of Atlanta and Georgia EPD for environmentally sensitive areas. Stormwater management measures included a micro-pool stormwater quality feature, bioretention areas, and a rain garden.

With the newly renovated Golf Course and Boone’s restaurant open for business, we encourage you to pay them a visit!

Courtland Street Bridge Project Earns ACEC Georgia 2020 Engineering Excellence Grand Award

Congratulations to Michael Baker International for winning the ACEC Georgia 2020 Engineering Excellence Grand Award for the Courtland Street Bridge Project! We were honored to be a part of the team for Surveying and Subsurface Utility Engineering during this incredible project. Preserving the historical aspects of the original bridge while also reducing the construction impact on the local community, the new and improved Courtland Street Bridge serves as a major thoroughfare through the downtown campus of Georgia State University (GSU). Originally built in 1906, the bridge crosses over two Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) tracks, two CSX Railroad tracks, and Decatur Street. Under the original design-bid-build concept, the closure duration for the reconstruction of the bridge would have been at least 18 months but by using design-build and Accelerated Bridge Construction, the total roadway closure time was five months!

New At-Promise Center breaks ground in South Atlanta

Long Engineering’s president, Joe Severin, PE, LEED AP, joined more than 140 civic and business leaders as they broke ground on the second At-Promise Center, located in Atlanta’s Pittsburgh neighborhood. Attendees included Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, City Council member Joyce Sheperd, Georgia Power’s Bentina Terry, Carter’s Bob Peterson, and Coca-Cola’s Helen Smith Price. They were joined by neighborhood leaders Johnny Floyd and Columbus Ward, nearly a dozen youth enrollees of the Westside At-Promise Center, as well as leaders of the social service agencies who provide services to the At-Promise Centers.

The At-Promise Centers are funded by donations to the Atlanta Police Foundation, which has raised more than $7 million in its current capital campaign focused on the At-Promise initiative. The At-Promise initiative is focused on reducing youth crime by providing customized social services including therapy, counseling, mentoring, tutoring, and enlightenment programs to youth who have been involved in the criminal justice system. At-Promise seeks to divert them to a pathway of productive lives, and away from recidivism.

Long Engineering is proud to have donated our civil engineering design services on this amazing project.

At-Promise Southside is due to open in Q3 2020.  More Information.

Kathryn Johnston Park to relieve flooding along Boone Boulevard

The newly named Kathryn Johnston Memorial Park in the English Avenue neighborhood in west Atlanta was redeveloped to help curb the persistent flooding of streets and homes that historically plagued this area. LONG designed the 3.2 acre park with Green Infrastructure to reduce the volume of stormwater that enters the 14’ diameter combined sewer that passes beneath the park property. This includes enhanced swales with weir walls to encourage ponding and promote infiltration, a stormwater planter on Oliver Street that overflows into a bio-retention area and two major water quality systems consisting of Stormtech Chambers encased in stone.

The Kathryn Johnston Memorial Park was developed by Park Pride, The Conservation Fund, and the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation and Office of Sustainability. Amenities will include a playground, fitness stations, and seating terrace.
