Oak Road / South Berkeley Lake Road
Gwinnett County, Georgia

These two projects were designed as a package for Gwinnett County. Oak Road was about an 0.8 mile-long section of roadway that had an existing five-lane urban on the southern end and a 2/3 lane section on the northern end with curbing on parts of the northern end. The project was to add sidewalk, install curb & gutter and longitudinal drainage where needed, improve traffic signalization and pedestrian movements at two signalized intersections due to an elementary school in the area. The design challenges included adjacent commercial development on the southern end with parking areas close to the roadway, but substantially lower than the existing roadway. Adding proper shoulders and sidewalk required the design of retaining walls to protect the existing parking areas. In the northern section, installing the proper sized longitudinal drainage system and having acceptable outfall areas without damage to adjacent properties was a key design issue.

South Berkeley Lake Road was a similar project to add proper shoulders, sidewalk, curb and gutter, longitudinal drainage, improved pedestrian crossings, etc. for about 0.5 mi.  The eastern end of the project tied into SR 141, a major four-lane urban arterial with the project improving turning radii, improved access to commercial property on the eastern end of the project and provided improved pedestrian safety along the project route.

Both projects were bid as a package and are currently awaiting NTP for the contractor. Long Engineering, Inc. provided full service concept design, traffic engineering, surveying, preliminary and final roadway design.
