Ellen Long invited to Facilities Advisory Board
Atlanta (July 20, 2010) Ellen Long, P.E., founding principal and President of Long Engineering, Inc. has been invited to participate on the Facilities Advisory Board under the University System of Georgia. In this role, Mrs. Long represents the private sector in direct communication exchange with advisory board leader, Linda Daniels, Vice Chancellor for Facilities.
“It is a great honor to be of service to the University System of Georgia through serving on the advisory board,” said Ellen Long. “It is critical to continue this collaborative dialogue between the Office of Real Estate and Facilities and the private industry to achieve the mission of developing and sustaining a superior built environment for higher education in Georgia.”
Sustainable Fellwood
Sustainable Fellwood is a 28 acre mixed use, mixed income development in Savannah, Georgia. Long Engineering, Inc. performed all of the civil engineering design for the roadway and utility infrastructure and Phase 1 and Phase 2, each consisting of 110 multi-family units. Southeast Construction Magazine will publish its 9th annual “Best of” Awards issue and will feature Sustainable Fellwood, winner of “Best of” in the category of “Multi-Family Residential/Hospitality”. Sustainable Fellwood has been certified (Stage 2) LEED for Neighborhood Development - Silver and the buildings are anticipated to be LEED New Construction Gold Certified.

Long Engineering, Inc. has opened a new branch office in Savannah, Georgia after tremendous success in working with Melaver, Inc., Lott + Barber Architects and the City of Savannah on the Sustainable Fellwood development. Rich with history and stylish architecture, The City of Savannah is looking to revitalize their community in addition to improving their transportation and infrastructure, proving to be a prime spot for upcoming projects. The Center for Civil and Human Rights, Atlanta, Georgia-
Civil Engineering Services
Serving as an educational and commemorative center, the Partnership for Civil and Human Rights has decided to construct a facility focusing on the historic struggle for African-American freedom and equality and relating it to current Human Rights Issues. Long Engineering, Inc. was chosen to perform the civil engineering services alongside the Freelon/HOK Architect Team for this project. Located on a 2.5-acre parcel on Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard donated by the Coca-Cola Company, the center will be located adjacent to other renowned downtown Atlanta attractions including the New World of Coca-Cola and the Georgia Aquarium.

Geotechnical Services
In addition to being awarded the civil engineering services for this project, Long Engineering, Inc. will also perform geotechnical services as a sub-consultant to the ATC/CERM JV team, who was awarded the Geotechnical and Environmental Services contract for the Center. We are enthused to be apart of both aspects of the project and to know that we are impacting the history and skyline of Atlanta.
National Parks Service ID/IQ Contract
Smith Dalia Architects was awarded the National Parks Service Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity Contract to serve the Southeast. Long Engineering, Inc. will be providing civil engineering and land surveying services. We have previously worked with the National Parks Service on the Blue Ridge Parkway Destination Center (LEED NC-Gold) in Ashville, North Carolina. Service regions included in the current ID/IQ contract are Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

2-Year Transportation Planning Contract
Long Engineering, Inc. has been awarded for the second consecutive time the 2-Year Transportation Planning Contract for Tennessee Department of Transportation. This is a continuing planning contract to provide engineering and planning services to the Tennessee Department of Transportation on projects ranging from Transportation Planning Reports, Interchange Studies, Roadway Safety Audit Reviews, Railroad Diagnostic Team Reviews, and other planning efforts as may be necessary.
2-Year On-Call Contract for Field Surveys
Long Engineering, Inc.’s Nashville office will be working with Tennessee Department of Transportation on a continuing contract for professional field surveys and other professional surveying related activities over a two-year period. Throughout the previous contracts, Nashville has worked on various projects in the Tennessee area including an Interstate 24 Survey, E1297, Nashville ITS Surveys, and Ooltewah Slip Ramp to name a few.

The Blue Ridge Parkway Destination Center was recently awarded LEED New Construction - Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
Designed to reduce energy consumption by 75% as compared with a conventional building, it received 10 of 10 Optimal Energy Performance points plus a very rare bonus point. Lord Aeck & Sargent was the architect for the National parks Service project and Long Engineering, Inc. provided civil engineering services. Among the site points approved were site selection, reduced site disturbance, stormwater management (rate, quantity and treatment), water efficiency and water use reduction.
Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal is Under Construction
Long Engineering was awarded the construction staking contract by Holder, Manhattan, Moody & Hunt, JV for the Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport. This 3 year contract requires 2-4 survey crews and survey management to be onsite full time staking the location of over $1.2 billion in new construction.
Chattahoochee Bend State Park will be the GREENEST Ever
Ecos Environmental Design Inc. has teamed with Long Engineering, Inc. on Phase 1 of the Chattahoochee Bend State Park in Coweta County for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The project includes roads, utilities, trails, campgrounds, boat ramp and various related buildings for a new park with a total project budget of $7.0 million. This will be one of the most creatively designed park projects in Georgia, employing US Green Building Council’s LEED Rating System for major buildings and Low Impact Development standards for the infrastructure. The design will occur in phases to take advantage of Coweta County’s construction of the 2 mile entrance road with its own forces beginning early in 2009.
Georgia Gwinnett College Population Set to Explode!
3,000 students are expected to attend the high-tech “Campus of Tomorrow,” this fall with 8,000 students anticipated by 2010, and 15,000 by 2015. To keep up with this explosive growth, GGC is expanding and has hired Leo A. Daly and Long Engineering, Inc. to prepare a Campus Master Infrastructure Plan the will become the blueprint for all future utility improvements on the campus. At the same time, this team has the honor of designing the new $28.3 million Library and Learning Center. This project is to be LEED NC, Silver Certified and will become the model by which all buildings on the campus meet sustainability goals. Long Engineering, Inc. also provided the civil engineering design for the recently completed, five-story, 737-car parking facility on the campus.
Appalachian Tech Breaks Ground
More than 100 legislators, elected officials, members of the board of the Technical College System of Georgia, Appalachian Technical College board members and community leaders gathered at the fourth roundabout on the Bluffs Parkway to celebrate the beginning of construction on the college’s $15 million, 60,000-square-foot building. Excavation is scheduled to begin this fall on 25 acres of property donated through a collaboration of the Development Authority of Cherokee County and Technology Park Atlanta. The college anticipates the first classes will be offered in Canton in summer 2011. Long Engineering, Inc. is providing civil engineering services to architect BRPH, Inc. on this exciting and fast paced new college campus slated for LEED NC, Silver certification.
Sustainable Fellwood
Long Engineering, Inc. was selected to provide civil engineering design services for Sustainable Fellwood, a 27-acre site located on Bay Street just west of Savannah’s Historic District. Initially Savannah’s and Georgia’s first housing project, Sustainable Fellwood is envisioned as a $50 million mixed-use development encompassing 220 Public/Affordable Housing Units (in several phases), 100 Senior Housing Units, 10 single family homeowner units, and potential retail, medical, and technical space. Amenities will include a clubhouse, an organic community garden and significant common green space. Sustainable Fellwood was entered into the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Neighborhood Development pilot program, will be one of Southface Energy Institute’s EarthCraft Communities on the Coast and will be guided by the Smart Growth Network’s principles for diverse, walkable, distinctive, attractive communities.

Piedmont Park is expanding!
Piedmont Park, Atlanta’s historic urban park in Midtown, is expanding! The plan calls for 53 new acres of open green space, bicycle and walking trails, formal and community gardens, an interactive water feature, children’s playgrounds, a skate park, athletic fields and woodlands. Long Engineering, Inc. is working with Kimley Horn & Associates, Inc. in the preparation of construction plans for the new park area. Long Engineering, Inc. is responsible for hydrology and hydraulics, particularly redefining floodplain impacts caused by the Clear Creek CSO Treatment Facility and West CSO Storage Tunnel.

After going through a stringent application process and on-site interview, we were excited to receive this certification and become a part of this great organization. As a female-owned business, Long Engineering, Inc. understands the importance of supporting women in the engineering industry. Our founder, Ellen Long, knows the difficulties that are often faced as a female engineer. To try and offset these difficulties and support women in engineering, Long Engineering, Inc. established a scholarship at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia to benefit a female student in the engineering field. Ellen Long, President, and other Long Engineering, Inc. team members traveled to the nation's capital to accept an Honor Award their innovative engineering on Sweetwater Creek State Park Visitor Center. Long Engineering, Inc. won the Georgia Engineering Excellence competition in February, qualifying them for the national competition. Out of over 180 entries, Long Engineering, Inc. was one of only 24 award winners in the national ACEC Engineering Excellence competition. Long Engineering, Inc. employee presents at 2007 Greenprints Conference--March 22, 2007
Eric Randall, P.E., Senior Engineer at Long Engineering, Inc., made a presentation at the 2007 Greenprints Conference about green roofs. Eric discussed stormwater and greywater management through green roofs and innovative site design. He was also able to use our award-winning, LEED Platinum project, Sweetwater Creek State Park Visitor Center, and our work at Glenwood Park as prime examples of quality, innovative design. The Greenprints Conference drew over 500 people to discuss sustainable building design.
